| Описание аверса | Central field bears the national emblem of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, depicting That Luang stupa framed by a wreath of rice sheaves, with a landscape background including paddy fields and vegetation. A decorative ribbon at the base of the emblem carries an inscription in Lao script. The Latin legend THE LAO PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC arcs along the upper periphery, while the Lao-script equivalent legend appears on the ribbon across the lower central field. The denomination 10 KIP is inscribed in Latin characters along the lower rim, with the Lao numeral equivalent rendered on the emblem ribbon. |

Issued to coincide with the FAO World Food Summit held in Rome in November 1996, this coin belongs to a wave of commemorative issues the FAO commissioned from member nations throughout the 1990s — many of which were struck in far larger quantities than their host countries' own circulating coinage. Laos had among the thinnest coin circulation infrastructure in Southeast Asia at the time, with most daily transactions conducted in paper kip or, informally, in Thai baht.
The FAO program was frequently criticized for producing pieces destined entirely for the collector market rather than circulation.
