Issued to mark the tenth anniversary of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, which was formally proclaimed on December 2, 1975, following the Pathet Lao's consolidation of power after decades of civil conflict intertwined with the wider Indochina wars. The LPDR replaced the Royal Lao Government almost without ceremony — King Savang Vatthana abdicated under pressure and was later sent to a re-education camp, where he died.
Commemorative coinage from this period was produced largely for international sale rather than domestic circulation, as Laos had little hard currency infrastructure in 1985.
