Ukraine's 10 hryvnia coinage shifted to a bimetallic format in the 1990s, but the karbovanets denomination belongs to a different and turbulent chapter entirely — the transitional currency used between 1992 and 1996 as Ukraine severed its monetary ties with the post-Soviet ruble zone. A 2025 commemorative restrike using that denomination is almost certainly a numismatic issue invoking wartime national identity, a pattern Ukraine's central bank has pursued aggressively since the 2022 Russian invasion, issuing dozens of collector pieces annually.
The colorized brass format places this firmly in the NBU's modern commemorative program, where enamel and colorization have become standard production choices.
