Issued in 2021, this coin had no particular fame until February 24, 2022, when Russian warships ordered the small garrison on Zmiinyi Island to surrender and the defenders' response — broadcast on Ukrainian state radio and circulated globally — made Snake Island one of the most recognized place names of the war. The island's numismatic profile changed overnight, and existing inventory sold out almost immediately across Ukrainian philatelic and coin outlets.
