Issued as part of Ukraine's ongoing wartime commemorative program, this coin belongs to a series documenting regional resilience during the Russian invasion that began in February 2022. Kharkiv Oblast, bordering Russia directly, endured some of the war's most intense early fighting and a partial occupation of outlying districts before Ukrainian forces recaptured most of the region in the Kharkiv counteroffensive of September 2022 — one of the fastest and largest territorial recoveries of the conflict.
Nickel-plated zinc was chosen over the silver or bimetallic compositions used in earlier Ukrainian commemoratives, keeping the issue accessible for general circulation rather than the collector market alone.
