Volodymyr Monomakh ruled Kyivan Rus from 1113 to 1125, a reign defined by his success in uniting fractious principalities and pushing back Cuman incursions on the steppe frontier. He is also credited with commissioning the Pouchennia — an instructional text addressed to his sons that survives as one of the earliest examples of Old East Slavic secular literature. Ukraine's post-independence commemorative silver program drew heavily on Rus-era rulers as a deliberate assertion of historical continuity, and Monomakh, given his outsized reputation in the medieval sources, was an obvious inclusion.
