Ukraine co-hosted UEFA Euro 2012 alongside Poland — the first time the tournament was held in Eastern Europe — after a joint bid awarded in 2007 that was considered a significant upset over Italy's competing proposal. Kharkiv's Metalist Stadium underwent a substantial reconstruction to meet UEFA requirements, a process complicated enough that the city's hosting rights were briefly under review in 2011, the same year this coin was struck.
