The Tereshchenko family were among the wealthiest sugar industrialists in the Russian Empire, their fortune built across the latter half of the 19th century through refineries concentrated in Left-Bank Ukraine. By 1900 the family controlled a significant share of imperial Russia's sugar output and had parlayed that wealth into banking, philanthropy, and eventually revolutionary-era politics — Mikhail Tereshchenko briefly served as Finance Minister in the Provisional Government of 1917 before fleeing into emigration after the Bolshevik seizure of power.
This issue belongs to Ukraine's long-running commemorative program honoring notable figures and dynasties tied to Ukrainian cultural and economic history. Mikhail Tereshchenko died in Monaco in 1956, never having returned to Ukraine.
