Vasyl Symyrenko was a nineteenth-century Ukrainian horticulturist who developed the Renet Symyrenka apple variety — still commercially cultivated today and one of the few Ukrainian agricultural contributions with genuine global distribution. His son Lev continued the work until Soviet authorities destroyed the family's pomological garden at Mliiv in the early 1930s during collectivization, executing Lev in 1938 during the Great Terror. This coin is less a commemoration of achievement than a belated acknowledgment of a family the Soviet state spent decades trying to erase.
