Svyatoslav I ruled Kievan Rus from roughly 964 until his death in 972, spending most of his reign on aggressive military campaigns rather than governing from Kyiv — he reportedly preferred to sleep in the open field with his troops rather than in a tent. He was killed by the Pechenegs at the Dnieper rapids, and the Pecheneg khan is said to have had his skull lined with gold to use as a drinking cup.
This coin was issued as part of Ukraine's ongoing "Rulers of Kievan Rus" commemorative series, which began in the late 1990s and drew directly on medieval chronicle sources, however fragmentary, for its historical framing.
