Ukraine launched an ambitious commemorative silver program in the mid-1990s partly to establish numismatic credibility for a currency — the hryvnia — that had only been introduced in September 1996, replacing the karbovanets at a rate of 100,000 to one. This ski-themed issue was among the early entries in that program, timed loosely around growing Ukrainian sporting identity in the post-Soviet period.
The .925 silver specification aligns with the Britannia standard rather than the more common .999 fine used by many national mints at the time — a deliberate choice that gave the series a slightly denser, harder-wearing character.
