Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachnyi was Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host in the early seventeenth century and remains one of the most strategically consequential figures in Ukrainian military history — his forces participated in the Polish-Muscovite War and he famously enrolled the entire Zaporozhian Army into the Kyiv Brotherhood in 1615 to shield the institution from suppression. Ukraine's National Bank launched its silver commemorative program in the mid-1990s as a deliberate exercise in reclaiming historical identity following Soviet-era erasure of such figures from public memory.
