Issued in 2013, this coin commemorates the Soviet liberation of the Donbas region from German occupation during World War II — a subject that carried no particular controversy at the time of minting. Within months of its release, Donbas would become the epicenter of an armed separatist conflict backed by Russia, rendering the phrase "liberation from fascist invaders" a live political weapon redeployed by both sides of a very different war.
