Sudak's fortress was built and expanded by the Genoese between roughly 1371 and 1469, when the Republic of Genoa administered the port — then called Soldaia — as a critical node in Black Sea trade. The Ottomans seized it in 1475, and the complex passed through Crimean Khanate and later Russian Imperial hands before becoming a protected monument in the Soviet period.
Ukraine's commemorative silver program of the early 2000s drew heavily on Crimean heritage sites before the peninsula's political status became contested. This piece predates that complication by a decade.
