| Additional information |
Issued under Ukraine's ongoing wildlife conservation coin program, this piece commemorates the European bison — a species that was declared extinct in the wild in 1927 following centuries of hunting and habitat loss. Captive breeding programs, largely centered on the Białowieża Forest straddling the Polish-Belarusian border, brought the animal back from complete extinction; wild populations were re-established beginning in 1952.
Ukraine's Carpathian region hosts one of the reintroduced herds descended from that recovery effort.
