Ukraine's National Bank began issuing commemorative hryvnia coins shortly after the currency's introduction in 1996, part of a broader effort to assert cultural identity through numismatic programs during the country's post-Soviet consolidation. The Easter issue belongs to a recurring Orthodox Christian series that drew on deep popular religiosity in Ukraine, where the Church had re-emerged publicly after decades of Soviet suppression — Easter observance in particular having been actively persecuted under Khrushchev's anti-religion campaigns of the late 1950s and 1960s.
