Part of the NBU's ongoing "Cities of Ukraine" series, this issue honors Buky, a small settlement in Cherkasy Oblast whose name derives from the Slavic word for beech trees. The 2008 release coincided with a period of aggressive commemorative output from the National Bank, which was issuing dozens of collector silver pieces annually as the hryvnia faced mounting pressure ahead of the 2008–2009 financial crisis that ultimately halved the currency's value against the dollar.
