| Obverse description | At the upper center, the small National Emblem of Ukraine (trident) is set against a background of radiating rays symbolizing Ukrainian independence. To either side of the central field, Zaporizhia Cossacks are depicted in a style derived from the icon of the Protection of the Sich. Along the lower arc, the denomination and date legend reads: 10 / ГРИВЕНЬ / 2005, accompanied by the metal fineness designation Ag 925, the weight in fineness 31.1 g, and the NBU Mint logotype. The country name УКРАЇНА is inscribed in a semicircular legend below the national emblem. |

Baturyn was the Hetmanate capital razed by Peter I's forces in November 1708 following Ivan Mazepa's alliance with Charles XII of Sweden. The destruction was total and deliberate — Menshikov's troops killed most of the inhabitants and burned the city to prevent it from serving as a Swedish supply base. Ukraine's post-independence commemorative program returned to Baturyn repeatedly, and this 2005 issue falls within a broader effort to rehabilitate figures and places suppressed under Soviet historiography.
The city was archaeologically excavated in earnest only from the 1990s onward, with Canadian-Ukrainian teams uncovering the destruction layer dating precisely to that 1708 massacre.
