Ukraine's first post-Soviet banknote series was commissioned from the Canadian Bank Note Company before independence was even formally consolidated — a practical necessity given that no domestic security printing infrastructure existed. This note was part of an emergency procurement arranged in 1991, with delivery timed to support the coupon-karbovanets transition period. The 10 Hryvnia denomination didn't enter full circulation immediately; the hryvnia itself was held back until September 1996, meaning these notes sat in reserve for years while karbovantsi remained the functional currency.

Maksymov and Lopata were among the first Ukrainian engravers to work on a sovereign national currency, trained within a Soviet system that had never required them to produce anything for an independent Ukrainian state.
