Hainfeld, a small industrial town in Lower Austria, was one of dozens of municipalities that issued Notgeld during the severe coin shortage following Austria's defeat in the First World War. The issuing body here is not the municipality of Hainfeld alone but a Zweckverband — a purpose-built administrative consortium of surrounding communes, an unusual arrangement that reflects how smaller communities pooled resources to manage the practicalities of emergency currency. Gutenberg in St. Pölten was a workhorse provincial press responsible for a significant run of Lower Austrian Notgeld issues during this period.
