10 Heller Zell an der Ybbs

Zell an der Ybbs is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this 10 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities after the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy left local economies starved of small-denomination coinage. The Waidhofen an der Ybbs printing house — a local commercial press rather than a specialist security printer — produced the series, which is consistent with the improvised nature of Austrian municipal Notgeld generally. Schönbrunner's design credit is unusual enough to note; named designers are not common on issues at this level.
