Wieselburg's Herz-Jesu-Apotheke was among hundreds of Austrian pharmacies and small businesses that issued their own Notgeld during the acute coin shortage of the First World War. Pharmacist Josef Wöhrl's name appears on the note as the responsible issuer — a legal requirement that made the proprietor personally liable for redemption. The printer, Groß of St. Pölten, handled a considerable volume of local emergency currency from the Lower Austrian region during this period.
Small-denomination pharmacy Notgeld redeemed poorly. Many customers simply never bothered, which is why surviving examples often show light circulation wear despite having passed through many hands.
