Obverse description The obverse is divided into a central vignette and two lateral panels. The central panel carries a line-art illustration of a rustic stone cottage with a pyramidal chimney, surrounded by vegetation, rendered in dark ink on an unprinted ground. The flanking side panels bear a decorative underprint in blue and gold, with stylised grapevine motifs — leaves and grape clusters — reflecting the viticulture heritage of the Wachau region. The denomination numeral '10' appears in red at the upper left and upper right corners, with 'Heller' inscribed below each, and the heading 'Kassenschein der Marktgemeinde' runs across the top; the place name 'Weissenkirchen in der Wachau' is printed in bold Gothic script along the lower border.

Reverse description The reverse carries the full text of the emergency money ordinance in German Gothic (Fraktur) script on plain paper. The issuing authority 'Weißenkirchen in der Wachau' is set in large display type near the top, followed by several paragraphs stating the total issue of 64,000 Kronen, the non-interest-bearing nature of the notes, and the redemption terms valid until 30 November 1920. The date 'Weißenkirchen in der Wachau, am 15. April 1920' appears above three manuscript signatures corresponding to the Bürgermeister, Vizebürgermeister, and Gemeinderat.

Comments

Weissenkirchen in der Wachau issued this 10 Heller Notgeld in 1920 as part of Austria's widespread municipal emergency currency experiment — the Heller and Krone had become so debased after the war that small change vanished from circulation almost entirely, forcing thousands of local authorities to print their own scrip. The Wachau valley communities were among the more prolific issuers, partly because the region's tourist trade created genuine demand for functional small denominations that the national banking system simply couldn't supply.
