Weissenkirchen in der Wachau was one of hundreds of Austrian municipalities forced to issue Notgeld during the postwar currency chaos, when small coin had effectively vanished from everyday commerce. The Marktgemeinde series was printed by Paul Gerin in Vienna, a firm that handled a substantial volume of Austrian local emergency issues during this period — competent, fast work, not prestige printing.
