Wachau Notgeld of this type was issued during the Austrian emergency currency period of 1920, when chronic coin shortages left municipalities scrambling to produce their own small-denomination substitutes. Spitz an der Donau, a wine-producing market town in the Wachau valley, was among hundreds of Austrian Gemeinden that commissioned locally themed issues — partly functional, partly aimed at the nascent collector trade that had already begun absorbing Notgeld as a revenue stream rather than a necessity.
The Schönbühel designation likely references the Schönbühel-Aggsbach parish area nearby, distinguishing this issue within a broader Wachau regional series.
