The denomination "10 Heller" appears in the upper left and upper right corners, with the legend "GUTSCHEIN" across the top and "DER GEMEINDE THANN. OÖ." in bold lettering along the lower margin. |

Thann is a small municipality in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note is one of the thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues that flooded the country after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monetary system left local communities without adequate small change. Municipal authorities — Bürgermeister, local councils, cooperative committees — took matters into their own hands, issuing their own emergency currency backed by nothing more formal than community trust and the expectation of eventual redemption.
The Jaksc/Pick reference JPR1067-10 places this firmly in the documented Austrian local issue corpus, but Thann's series is obscure even by Notgeld standards. Josef Krawinkler's signature as authorizing official is the primary identification anchor for this specific piece.
