Sankt Johann am Wimberg is a small rural commune in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued after the First World War when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipal authorities scrambling to provide small-denomination exchange currency. The central government could not produce low-value coins quickly enough to meet everyday transactional needs, so thousands of communes — many of them tiny — printed their own emergency issues.
Wolferstorfer's signature as issuing authority reflects the local Bürgermeister's direct accountability for the note's redemption. Whether these were ever formally redeemed at face value is, for a commune this size, an open question.
