10 Heller Sparbach

Sparbach is a tiny settlement in the Helenental valley southwest of Baden bei Wien, and its decision to issue emergency currency in 1920 places it among the hundreds of Austrian municipalities that resorted to Notgeld after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small denominations almost impossible to source. The National Bank had not yet stabilized coin supply, and villages this size often relied on a single local printer rather than any specialist banknote firm. F. Seitenberg operated out of Vienna's third district — a commercial job printer, not a security press.

The practical effect was notes of variable quality and essentially no anti-counterfeiting provision, which mattered little given the hyperlocal circulation these pieces were ever intended for.
