The upper portion carries a two-line aphorism, below which the main text block identifies the notgeld issue, states the total authorised circulation of 125,000 Kronen in 50-, 20- and 10-Heller notes, declares the notes interest-free and redeemable by the Gemeinde Sonntagberg until 31 December 1920, and warns that counterfeiting is punishable by law. The designer and printer credits appear at the foot. |

Sonntagberg is a small pilgrimage commune in Lower Austria, and its 1920 Notgeld issue reflects the municipal desperation of the postwar Kleingeldenot — the acute shortage of small change that followed the collapse of the Habsburg economy. Hundreds of Austrian municipalities turned to local printers to fill the gap, and Waidhofen an der Ybbs, a regional center with an established printing trade, served several nearby communities in this capacity.
The design credit to Arch. J. B. Bukovics and Knell is the genuinely unusual element here — commissioning an architect for emergency scrip suggests Sonntagberg took the aesthetic seriously, a cut above the purely functional municipal issues of the period.
