Sigmundsherberg is a small railway junction town in Lower Austria, and its notgeld issues of 1920 were a direct response to the acute small-change shortage that plagued Austria in the years immediately following the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy. Municipal and local authorities across the country were essentially left to paper over the gap themselves, with varying degrees of design ambition and printing quality.
F. Berger of Horn was the obvious choice for several Waldviertel communities — a regional printer producing competent if modest results for a string of nearby municipalities in the same period.
