Schrems is a small market town in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, and this note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian municipal notgeld issued between 1919 and 1921 when the post-imperial monetary system was in near-total disarray and small coin had essentially vanished from circulation. Thousands of Austrian and German municipalities printed their own fractional notes during this period; Schrems was one of hundreds in Lower Austria alone to do so.
F. Berger of Horn was a regional commercial printer that handled notgeld for several Waldviertel communities, which accounts for a degree of stylistic consistency across issues from neighboring towns.
