One of thousands of Austrian municipal notgeld issues printed in the chaotic years following the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy, when coin shortages drove even small villages to produce their own fractional currency. Schönbichl, a minor Lower Austrian municipality, had this 10 Heller note run off at Franz Kielar's print shop in nearby Amstetten — a local commercial printer, not a specialist security press. Three signatories authenticated each note, which was typical for issues where municipal credibility had to substitute for institutional backing.
The Kielar imprint is the most traceable detail here. Amstetten-area notgeld from this printer survives in reasonable numbers, suggesting a decent original print run.
