Schildorn is a small rural commune in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similarly modest municipalities, it issued emergency small change — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that followed Austria's defeat in the First World War. The 10 Heller denomination was among the most commonly needed, since metal coins of that value had effectively vanished from everyday commerce by 1919–1920. Josef Ornetsmüller's signature as Gemeinde-Vorsteher gives the note its legal authority under the issuing commune's own guarantee — essentially the personal credit of a village official backing paper in lieu of copper.
