At centre, a circular wreath frames the municipal coat of arms of Schärding, comprising a chequered field and a key. Flanking text blocks state the total issue amount of 80,000 Kronen authorised by council resolution of 13 March 1920 (left) and the redemption conditions at the Stadtkasse (right). A bold black band at the foot carries '10 HELLER 10' in large numerals and letters, with the printer's imprint 'E. Prietzel, Steyr' below. Schärding is an Upper Austrian town on the Inn River, directly across from the Bavarian town of Neuhaus am Inn — a border position that made its postwar economic isolation acute. This note is a Notgeld issue, one of thousands produced by Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921 when small coin effectively vanished from circulation due to hoarding and metal shortages following the collapse of the Habsburg economy.
E. Prietzel in Steyr was a regional commercial printer, not a specialist security house, which shows in the modest production values typical of municipal Austrian Notgeld. The JPR0859b designation indicates a variant within the Schärding series — the "b" suffix usually reflects a change in paper stock or a detail in the printing run.
