Schardenberg is a small rural municipality in Upper Austria, near the Inn River and the German border. This 10 Heller note is one of the thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues that flooded the country between 1919 and 1922, printed by local authorities to address a severe small-coin shortage after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left the new Republic of Austria chronically short of fractional currency.
The single signature — Matth. Maier — almost certainly belongs to the Bürgermeister or a designated municipal official, signing on behalf of the commune to give the note its local legal standing. Schardenberg's issue is among the more obscure Gemeindenotgeld examples, with limited surviving documentation on print runs or redemption records.
