Rannariedl is a small market town on the south bank of the Danube in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that flooded Austria between 1919 and 1922. The collapse of the Austro-Hungarian crown's purchasing power left municipalities scrambling for small change — coins had effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted, and the central government was in no position to supply substitutes. Local authorities issued their own paper in denominations too small for anyone else to bother counterfeiting.
Gesellschaft für Graphische Industrie, operating out of Vienna's sixth district, was a commercial printer that handled a substantial volume of Austrian municipal Notgeld during this period — not a specialist security printer, but a practical choice for small communities with limited budgets.
