Puchkirchen am Trattberg is a village in Upper Austria with a population that barely reached a few hundred in 1920. That such a place issued its own emergency currency is less surprising than it sounds — Austria's postwar notgeld boom produced thousands of municipal issues as small-denomination coins vanished from circulation entirely amid the economic dislocation following the collapse of the empire. The municipality, not a bank, signed off on this note, with Josef Seiringer's signature carrying the legal weight of the issue.
