Ober-Wölbling is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this 10 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921 — a response to chronic coin shortages that left local economies grinding against each other for small change. The Buchdruckerei Herzogenburg, a regional print shop in the nearby town of Herzogenburg, produced notes for several communities in the area during this period, working with whatever typography and stock was available.
Municipal Notgeld of this type was typically withdrawn and demonetized once central coin supplies normalized, making circulated survivors rarer than uncirculated ones — the opposite of the usual pattern.
