Neuhofen an der Krems was one of hundreds of Austrian market towns that issued Notgeld during the severe coin shortage that followed the First World War. These locally printed emergency pieces were technically the obligation of the issuing municipality, redeemable in theory but often worthless in practice once the hyperinflationary period hit its stride. The 10 Heller denomination sits at the lower end of the typical Notgeld range — small enough that redemption was rarely worth the trouble.
The JPR0648a reference places this within the Jaksch-Pick Austrian Notgeld catalogue. Survivors are common as a class but condition varies sharply by municipality.
