One of thousands of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues printed in the wake of the postwar coin shortage, this 10 Heller note from Neuhaus im Wienerwald reflects a specifically local response to a national problem. The Habsburg monarchy's collapse in 1918 left Austria's new republic with a badly disrupted monetary supply — small-denomination coins vanished from circulation almost immediately, hoarded or simply absent, and municipalities across Lower Austria began issuing their own emergency fractions to keep everyday trade moving.

Neuhaus im Wienerwald is a small Wienerwald community, and its Notgeld series is not among the widely collected "Kunstnotgeld" issues that Austrian towns produced for the philatelic trade. This is functional emergency paper, issued to be spent.
