Mitterndorf im Steirischen Salzkammergut was one of hundreds of Austrian Gemeinden that issued small-denomination Notgeld in the early postwar years as federal coinage disappeared into hoarding. These municipal emergency issues were a direct consequence of metal shortages and monetary disruption following Austria-Hungary's collapse — the central authorities simply could not keep low-value coins in circulation fast enough to replace what vanished.
Paul Gerin in Vienna handled a substantial volume of this municipal Notgeld work, printing for communities across Styria and beyond. The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0621I places this within the first Mitterndorf series.
