Opmerkingen

Mautern an der Donau is a small town on the south bank of the Danube opposite Krems in Lower Austria. This 10 Heller piece is a Notgeld issue — local emergency money printed by municipal authorities during the currency chaos that followed Austria's collapse after the First World War. The Heller denomination itself was already largely obsolete by 1920, which gives these small-town issues an odd anachronistic quality even at the moment of printing.

The printed date of 30 April 1945 is almost certainly a catalog error or misread — that date falls at the end of the Second World War, decades after Heller coinage and Notgeld of this type had been retired. The issue year of 1920 is consistent with the broader Austrian Notgeld wave.
