Opmerkingen

Mauerkirchen is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note is a product of the Kleingeldersatz — the emergency small-change shortage that gripped Austria immediately after World War One. The dissolution of the Habsburg monetary system left communities without usable coinage, and hundreds of Austrian municipalities issued their own Notgeld to fill the gap. Mauerkirchen was one of them.

These local issues were typically authorised by the market council and printed in very small runs, often by regional printers with limited typographic resources. Survival rates are uneven — some were redeemed and destroyed, others simply kept as curiosities by locals who never bothered to spend them.
