Comments

Marbach an der Donau is a small Lower Austrian market town, and like hundreds of similar municipalities, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The 10 Heller denomination was among the most commonly needed for everyday transactions, precisely because metal coinage of that value had largely vanished from circulation by 1920.

Jakob Philipp of Vienna was a commercial printer, not a specialist security firm, and handled Notgeld commissions for numerous Austrian municipalities during this period. The Jaksc/Pick reference JPR0579II-10 places this in the second series for Marbach, suggesting an earlier issue had already been exhausted.
