At the upper portion, the denomination numeral '10' appears in oval guilloche cartouches at each corner, flanked by the inscription 'HELLER' and the word 'ZEHN' in bold lettering, with a central circular town seal bearing the name 'LILIENFELD'. The central vignette presents a monochrome view of Lilienfeld Abbey set against a forested mountain backdrop, signed 'Ing. E. Schmidt' at lower right. Austrian Notgeld from the early 1920s occupies a peculiar corner of paper money history. Following the collapse of the Habsburg economy and the acute coin shortages of the immediate postwar years, thousands of Austrian municipalities issued their own emergency small-denomination notes — Lilienfeld among them. These were legal stopgap measures, not rebellious local currency, authorized under federal provisions that briefly allowed market towns to fill the vacuum left by vanishing metal coinage.
The engraver credit to Ing. E. Schmidt is atypical for Notgeld of this class; most municipal issues were produced by regional commercial printers with no named artist. Whether Schmidt designed, engraved, or merely oversaw production is not recorded in standard references.
