Lembach im Mühlkreis is a small market community in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note is one of the Notgeld issues that flooded Austria between roughly 1919 and 1921, when small coin virtually vanished from circulation due to wartime metal shortages and postwar hoarding. Thousands of Austrian municipalities — many no larger than a village — printed their own emergency pfennig-denomination scrip to keep local commerce moving.
H. Bauer's design credit is unusual for a piece at this level; most Gemeinde Notgeld of this type were produced anonymously by regional printers with no individual designer acknowledged.
