Austrian municipal notgeld of this period was issued under genuine duress — the postwar coin shortage was severe enough that hundreds of towns printed their own fractional paper rather than wait for Vienna to act. Kufstein's series appeared in multiple color variants distinguishing denominations, orange among them. These local issues were legal within their issuing municipality but useless elsewhere, which kept circulation geographically tight and survivorship rates surprisingly high — most came home and sat in drawers rather than wearing out in trade.
