Kritzendorf is a small spa village on the Danube northwest of Vienna, and its municipal notgeld was issued in 1920 to address the acute small-change shortage that continued to plague Austria well after the armistice. The 10 Heller denomination sits at the lowest practical end of emergency coinage substitutes — issued at the community level precisely because the central authorities couldn't supply enough coin to keep local commerce functional.
Hermes Buch- und Kunstdruckerei, based in Vienna's 17th district, was a prolific printer of Austrian notgeld during this period, responsible for dozens of municipal issues across Lower Austria.
