Hallstatt's 10 Heller notgeld from 1920 is a product of the Austrian postwar small-change crisis that paralyzed commerce across hundreds of municipalities. With the old Habsburg coinage effectively hoarded or melted down and the new Republic struggling to supply subsidiary denominations, local authorities were legally permitted — briefly — to issue their own emergency paper. Hallstatt, a market town of fewer than a thousand souls on the Salzkammergut lake, issued its own rather than rely on regional supply that never reliably arrived.

The Jaksc catalog reference places it firmly in the Oberösterreich notgeld corpus. Short-run municipal issues like this were typically redeemed within months.
