Comments

Götzendorf an der Leitha issued this 10 Heller note as part of the vast wave of Austrian municipal notgeld that flooded the country following the collapse of the Habsburg economy. The chronic coin shortage of the early postwar years forced even small market towns to print their own fractional emergency money — the central authorities in Vienna were simply unable to keep low-denomination coinage in circulation.

The Jaksc catalog reference places this in a well-documented but sprawling series; condition varies enormously because many of these rural issues saw genuine heavy use before being redeemed, unlike the collector-targeted notgeld printed elsewhere for philatelic sale.
